The Go-Between
Memoirs of a Wee Belfast Girl Who Became an International Peacemaker
The Irish News - "An extraordinary story of courage, compassion, and reconciliation."
The Go-Between: Memoirs of a Wee Belfast Girl Who Became an International Peacemaker tells the life story of Mary Montague. Jim Longo's remarkable friend and professional colleague met in Romania at the 7th Annual Mediators Beyond Borders Congress. Mary, the recent recipient of the Bremen Peace Prize, and was being honored there as Peacemaker of the Year. Jim's invitation led to her teaching in America, a deep friendship, and becoming the co-author of her Memoirs.
Mary began her successful peacemaking as a nurse, mother, and foster mother during the bitter years of sectarian violence in the Irish Troubles. Her successful mediation between feuding Catholic and Protestants, hostile police and army officers, prisoners, ex-prisoners, and terrorists led to her international peace work throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. Mary's listening skills, and empathy allowed her to connect with grass roots peace builders in Bosnia, Kosovo, Sudan, Columbia, Belarus, combatants on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, and students at Washington & Jefferson College. Her work with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Prince Charles, Ted Kennedy, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and others provides insights and fresh perspectives on them and making peace a reality. Best of all, Mary is a delightful story teller. She and the heroes, heroines, and villains she writes about bring laughter, suspense, wisdom and surprises to readers on every page.
